    Vermont agritourism is going digital. The UVM Extension had to postpone its first international workshop until next August. Hundreds of experts were expected to attend. So, instead, it is hosting a virtual series of conversations with farmers from around the world. UVM Extension Professor Lisa Chase says Vermont's working landscape is essential for both Vermont's rural and urban areas, and many people aren't able to have those experiences where they live.

    Agritourism businesses hopeful for a bump in attendance this fall

    The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many entertainment venues and typical family activities to be canceled this year and Alabama's agritourism industry is no exception. But as students and parents continue to be stuck inside their homes for school and work, farmers are optimistic for this year's fall season. "People are going to be hesitant to think about where they should go, but I can't think of a more safe, wholesome and educational opportunity than going out to an agritourism operation in the state," Hunter McBrayer told ADN.

    The COVID-19 pandemic has nudged a lot of people out to farms to buy produce and meat directly from farmers. Michelle Sirles of Rendleman Orchards in Union County, Illinois, said she noticed more traffic from visitors this spring. It is a trend that farms have been trying to encourage.

    In the early 2000's, I had the joy of spending a memorable 4 days with Bill Burrows, a 6th-generation rancher and Holistic Management practitioner from Northern California. Bill told us the story of how his family very nearly lost the ranch in the 1980's when the bottom fell out of the cattle market, and how a change in his thinking helped them recover, by developing multiple new enterprises, including hosting small groups of guests for weekend-long hunting expeditions.

    When the schools shuttered because of the coronavirus pandemic, Jerry Conner began to worry about the fate of his farm. Four Oaks Farms, a hydroponic operation in Wirtz, counted Franklin County Public Schools and Roanoke College among its customers. And the farmers markets where Conner also sells his lettuce and greens were scrambling to adapt. He estimated those two avenues make up about 80% of the farm’s sales.

    PSU to offer 'road map' for agri-tourism after study

    A team of researchers led by a Penn State agricultural economist will receive $500,000 over three years to study agritourism in the United States and to develop research-based information and guidance for farmers looking to diversify their incomes through agritourism activities. The goal of the grant, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is to develop and disseminate practical information that will allow rural communities and owners of small and medium-sized farms to benefit from the growing consumer interest in on-farm experiences, said Claudia Schmidt, assistant professor of marketing and local/regional food systems in the College of Agricultural Sciences.

    COVID might provide agritourism with a bounce

    A Colorado State University economist says COVID-19 might not have a large, negative impact on agritourism. Stephan Weiler tells Brownfield more people have been taking road trips for vacation during the pandemic. "People are talking about taking road trips as opposed to flying and agritourism is largely car-based," he said.
